85 km south east of Chania we find the Arkadi monastery. The Arkadi monastery is one of the most historic monasteries of Crete. It is located at the foothills of Psiloritis mountain between a small plateau.
The Arkadi monastery is very famous for its’ Cretan history against the Ottoman occupation.
On the 8th November 1866 and after 3 days of continuous fighting, 943 Greeks, in the majority women and children in refusal to surrender to the Turks, were shot down in the barracks and then an explosion was activated upon them resulting in the death of many Greeks and Turks.
The Arkadi monastery is identified with the Greek revolution against the Turks and the 8th of November is celebrated each year in honor of the Greek fighters for the Cretan resistance against the Turks.
