In a short distance from Chania, just 25 km away, you will reach the ancient olive tree of Vouves. Located in the small village of Vouves, the huge olive tree is the oldest in the world – more than 3000 years according to professionals of the field. The olive tree still produces olives and branches of the tree were used to weave head bands for the winners of the Olympic Games of Athens in 2004 and the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008.
Next to the tree there is a small museum that shows old Cretan tools and information about the Cretan harvesting of the olives and information about the Cretan diet.
